Questions and Comments We've Received

May 23, 2003

I must take offense at the personal attack on Rick Dickson leveled by the faculty member in the May 19 feedback. As an old alum I have watched the Tulane athletic fan base erode because of constraints put on the programs by the Administration over the years starting with President Harris in the 50's. As a business person I have found until Rick Dickson was hired no one tried to market TU athletics. I think he deserves a chance to do what he was hired to do. On another aspect I read about potential D-3 competition and am struck that none mentioned is close by. To me that means that we would have lots of travel expense with almost no revenue. The TP article quotes a TU source as saying a good D-3 program would cost about $5 million with almost no revenue. That loss is similar to the loss the Board says we must erase or drop D-1. It appears to me then the issue is D-1 with Dickson's plan to cut losses or D-3 with similar losses and no plan. Also have any non BCS schools considered legal action. BCS exclusion and Title 9 are the real causes of athletic deficits. Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
